Despite being pretty much dormant for 5 years the Jeep’s electrical systems are all working faultlessly – not even a bulb needs replacing, which is both impressive and allows me to feel delightfully frugal. Some of the mechanical bits brought to life by these electricals though? Not so much…
That’s actually a little unfair. The source of the crunching sound from my passenger-side door – followed shortly after by a slowly sinking window – is the only weak link in an otherwise perfectly good window regulator and another well documented XJ issue. Steiger Performance explains the symptoms perfectly and also provides a very neat-looking kit to solve the problem without resorting to an expensive (and slightly overkill) replacement regulator. The only issue is that, for us Limeys, the postage costs can end up being more expensive than the kit itself…
Luckily there are also a number of guides floating around on the net which can help you fix it for little or no outlay – I adapted this excellent cotter-pin-based fix with a spiral of wire to mimic the original part and successfully barn-tuned the window back into life. I trust my workmanship so much I won’t even be carrying an emergency roll of duct tape!
